Doylestown, Pa. (April 9, 2009) - Alvernia University fell to 1-9 in the Freedom Conference (11-16 overall) with two losses at Delaware Valley College (10-10, 6-2 Freedom) this afternoon. The Crusaders were held scoreless in the first game of the day and gave up three unearned runs to fall by a score of 4-0. They followed that with a 4-3 loss in the second game of the day.
Sophomore
Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) took the loss in the first game of the day despite giving up just four hits and one earned run. She also was tabbed with the loss in the second game after giving up four earned runs over six innings. She struck out eight on the day and added a hit of her own in game two.
In the first game the Aggies from Delaware Valley scored one run in the bottom of the fourth and added three more in the sixth inning as Alvernia committed three back to back to back errors. Both
Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) and
Dina Chiappelli (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) were 2-for-3 in the first game. Alvernia managed just five hits overall in game one.
Alvernia fell behind quickly in game two, allowing two runs in the first inning, and another in the second. They would finally score their first run of the day in the third inning thanks to an RBI-double from
Samantha Geisinger (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin). The Aggies put up another run in the fourth inning for the 4-1 lead, but Alvernia would counter with two of their own in the top of the fifth.
Janelle Lynch (Macungie, Pa./Brandywine) led off the inning with a single and scored on a single from Sorrentino. Sorrentino would score Alvernia's third and final run of the game on an Aggie error.
Sorrentino was 4-for-6 on the day with a run scored and an RBI.
Alvernia will return to action Tuesday April 14th with a non-conference home game against Arcadia at 3:00 pm.
