Steve DeBarberie (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) delivered a three-run triple and came around to score as Alvernia University (17-14, 4-5) tied the game with five runs in the eighth only to see DeSales University (18-14, 7-4) win an important Freedom Conference game with a walk-off homer in the ninth in baseball action at Butz Field.
DeSales scored a single run in the first which Alvernia answered with a run in the third. The host Bulldogs regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the third, and built the lead to 6-1 with two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings.
DeSales pitching walked the first two batters in the eighth and sophomore
Reid Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) loaded the bases on a bunt single. Freshman
Mike Latona (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) pushed across a run drawing a one-out walk.
DeBarberie was the next to bat and welcomed the next Bulldog reliever with a triple to the gap in left center to pull the Crusaders within a run. Sophomore
Bruce Williams (Havertown, Pa./Havertown) was next up and he delivered a single through the left side to tie the game.
DeSales went in order in the eighth and Alvernia had just one runner on in the ninth with two out. Alvernia reliever
Ed Thompson (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) retired the first batter in the bottom of the ninth, but the next batter lifted a shot to right to end the game.
Martin and DeBarberie both finished with two hits on the day for Alvernia.
Alvernia and DeSales will face each other again Friday at Alvernia.
