Alvernia Recovers To Take Game Two At Penn State-Berks

GAME ONE BOX SCORE
GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (April 16, 2009) - Sophomore pitcher Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) threw all 14 innings this afternoon allowing just one earned run as Alvernia (12-17) settled for the doubleheader split in non-conference action at Penn State Berks (10-16).  The Crusaders dropped the first game of the day 2-0 but recovered to take game two 6-1.

Penn State Berks got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after a lead-off single and a misplayed bunt from the Crusader defense allowed the lead-off batter to score.  The Nittany Lions added one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning after Britany Hicks stayed alive after Alvernia's defense dropped a foul fly ball and would lead off the inning with a double.  She came around to score on an RBI single from Marlee Manwiller.

Alvernia managed only four hits in the first game of the day, two coming off the bat of Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall).  They would threaten in the fourth and fifth inning but in the fourth would bunt into a first-to-home double play, and in the fifth would hit into a first-to-home double play.

The Crusaders got some redemption in the top of the first inning of game two, pushing across two runs for the early lead thanks to a lead-off single from Janelle Lynch (Macungie, Pa./Brandywine), a Penn State error and a triple from Sorrentino.  Alvernia added three more runs in the third inning for the comfortable 5-0 lead.  Lynch again led off with a single, quickly stole second and was bunted to third base.  Sorrentino connected for a grounded up the middle for her third RBI of the day and would score an a throwing error.  Their final run in the third inning came from Samantha Geisinger (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) who made it all the way to third on a throwing error and would score on a fielder's choice.

Lynch would score again in the fourth inning after another single and stolen base followed by a solid single from Dina Chiappelli (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg).

Jensen shut down the Nittany Lion offense in game two scattering four hits and one earned run over seven innings.

Sorrentino was 5-for-7 on the day with a triple, a double and three RBIs.  Lynch was 4-for-7 with a 4-for-4 performance in the second game of the day.

Alvernia will travel to FDU-Florham this Saturday for a Freedom Conference doubleheader beginning at noon.
