GAME ONE BOX SCORE
GAME TWO BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (April 5, 2009) - The Crusader softball team (9-14, 1-7 Freedom) committed six errors as they were swept by visiting DeSales University (16-8, 7-3 Freedom) this afternoon in Freedom Conference action on their newly completed home field at Angelica Park. Despite an early 1-0 lead in the first game Alvernia eventually fell 3-4, and followed with a 0-3 loss in game two.
After two scoreless innings for both teams in the first game, Alvernia struck first in the bottom of the third inning to take the 1-0 lead. After two strikeouts to start the inning,
Janelle Lynch (Macungie, Pa./Brandywine) got things going with a single and after a stolen base and a wild pitch Lynch would eventually score on an error by the DeSales shortstop.
Alvernia's lead was short-lived as the Bulldogs struck for three runs in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a lead-off singles followed by back-to-back doubles. A Crusader error would prolong the inning allowing DeSales to push across one more run. DeSales tagged on their fourth run of the day in the top of the fifth inning after
Jen Lococo connected for a sacrifice fly on a deep fly ball to left field.
The Crusaders would not gow down without a fight nearly tying the game in the bottom of the seventh. Pinch hitter
Amy Mesce (Pittstown, NJ/Delaware Valley) led off the inning with a walk and after a strike out Lynch kept things rolling with her second single of the game. After a fly-out for the second out of the inning that advanced both runners,
Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) came up big with a two-out, two-RBI double to left center field. Alvernia wasn't able to complete the comeback after a fly-out ended the inning and would settle for the 3-4 loss.
In the second game of the double-header DeSales would put up one run in the second inning and add two more in the fourth inning for their three runs. Alvernia committed two errors in the fourth inning which would account for both runs. The Crusaders were not able to muster much offence off the Bulldogs, managing just six hits over seven innings, and having just two runners reach third base.
Lynch was 4-for-8 on the day with two runs scored and two stolen bases, Sorrentino ended the day with a 3-for-7 performance including two RBIs.
The Crusaders will look to get back on the winning track Wed. April 8th when they host Albright College in non-conference action at Angelica Park at 3:00 pm.
