Shane Zellers (Wiconisco, Pa./Williams Valley) and
Chuck Nicholas (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) both went six innings and picked up a win as Alvernia University (2-0) swept a doubleheader from St. John Fisher (1-2) Sunday afternoon to kick off the Spring Break schedule in Vero Beach, Florida.
Zellers struck out six and gave up four runs, two earned, in a 6-4 win in the opener. Nicholas gave up six runs, three earned, and struck out four in a 7-6 win in game two.
Austin Rohrbach (Maxatawny, Pa./Kutztown) struck out the side and earned the save in game one.
Brian Longo (Uncasville, Conn./Montville) struck out a pair to earn the save in game two.
Chuck Krichling (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington) and
Steve DeBarberie (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) picked up a pair of RBIs in game one. DeBarberie's came on a two-out, two-run homer in the fourth that put the Crusaders up 5-3.
Zellers brought the game-tying run to the plate in the seventh giving up a single and hitting a batter. The Cardinals scored on a stolen base and a throwing error, but Rohrbach recorded three straight strikeouts to end it.
Krichling scored two runs without a hit in game two and
Tim Ahlquist (Millville, N.J./Millville) was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI.
The Cardinals put the tying run on base in the seventh against Longo in game two, but the senior reliever earned the save with two strikeouts and a ground out.
Alvernia will continue the Spring Break schedule facing Johnson & Wales (R.I.) on Monday.
