Junior
Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) got things started for the Crusaders with a walk to lead off the first game. After a hit by pitch and a fielder's choice that plated a run, freshman
Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) would single through the left side to score Alvernia's second run. Later in the first, sophomore Dianne Lightner (Gaithersburg, Md./Holy Cross Academy) came up with a two-out RBI single into left field to score Alvernia's fifth run of the inning. Freshman Peto followed with another two-out RBI single to give the Crusaders the early 6-0 lead.
Alvernia added two more runs in the second inning thanks to a Harrisburg error and an RBI single from
Michelle Hermanns (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West).
Despite taking the early 8-0 lead Alvernia was shut down in the middle four innings, while allowing three Nittany Lion runs, all unearned. PSU-Harrisburg managed three runs off of only one hit in the fourth inning thanks to four Crusader errors. Alvernia regrouped to escape the inning with an 8-3 lead and added five insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning, with two coming off the bat of senior
Rachel Evans (Tower City, Pa./Williams Valley) as she lined a two-out double to the fence.
The Crusaders got on the board early again in game two after Sorrentino led off the inning with a single and
Janelle Lynch (Macungie, Pa./Brandywine) followed with a single of her own. Sorrentino took third on Lynch's single while Lynch snuck into second base. An RBI fielder's choice from catcher
Samantha Geisinger (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) gave Alvernia the early 1-0 lead.
The game would remain 1-0 until Alvernia put up six runs in the top of the fourth inning. They strung together five hits and earned one walk to plate six runs. The Nittany Lions scored their lone run of the game in the fifth inning after a Crusader allowed the run to sneak across. The Crusaders added an eighth run in the sixth inning after
Dina Chiappelli (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) led off the inning with a walk and scored on a fielder's choice.
Peto reached base safely all eight times at the plate today, while Dungee was 2-for-3 in the first game and Evans was 2-for-6 with three RBIs.
