Reading, Pa. (March 18, 2010) - The Crusader (6-4) Softball squad swept the visiting Mighty Macs from Immaculata (0-2) this afternoon by matching scores of 10-2 in their home opener.  Alvernia's bats exploded for 23 hits and 20 runs in the double-header paced by Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) who was 5-for-6 with seven RBIs in the non-conference match-up.

Alvernia got down to business early in the first game posting two runs in the first inning thanks to a reach on error from Janelle Lynch (Macungie, Pa./Brandywine), a single from Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) and RBI hits from Sorrentino and Dina Chiappelli (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg).  Starter Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) held the Mighty Macs scoreless as Alvernia plated five more runs in the third inning with seven out of their first eight batters connecting for basehits.  A two-RBI single from Chiappelli in the fourth inning gave Alvernia the comfortable 9-0 lead.

The Mighty Macs struck for some runs of the own as they plated two runs in their half of the fifth inning to fight off the eight-run mercy rule for another half-inning.  Alvernia would have none of it as they promptly pushed across their tenth run in the bottom of the fifth inning for the 10-2 win.

Game two was more of the same as the Crusaders put up three runs in the first inning, but this time Immaculata would battle back sooner with a run in the second and the third.  Clinging to just a one-run lead, Alvernia managed three more runs in the fourth inning highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Sorrentino.  Four more runs in the fifth inning would secure the 10-2, 5 inning game for Alvernia.

Sorrentino was 5-for-6 on the day with two doubles, a triple, seven RBIs and three runs scored.  Freshman Peto's bat stayed hot with a 5-for-7 performance and five runs scored,

Both starters, Jensen and freshman Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) improved to 3-2 on the season.

Alvernia will open their Commonwealth Conference play this Saturday when they face Elizabethtown at home at noon.
