Reading, Pa. (March 20, 2010) – Alvernia (6-6, 0-2 Comm.) was swept this afternoon at home in Commonwealth Conference action by the Blue Jays from Elizabethtown (9-2-1, 2-0 Comm.). The Blue Jays needed just five innings in the first game to down Alvernia 8-0 and they would take the second game 5-2 after a five-run sixth inning.
In the first game of the day the Crusaders scattered just three hits off of Blue Jay starter
Emily Vogel. Elizabethtown jumped ahead in the top of the first inning by a score of 4-0 after three Blue Jay hits and one Crusader error. Freshman
Elly McCarthy went deep to give the Blue Jays their third and fourth runs of the inning; this was McCarthy's third homerun of the season. Elizabethtown added two more runs in the second inning and scored their final two runs in the third inning.
Starter
Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) gave up six earned runs and was tabbed with the loss to fall to 3-3 on the season. Freshman
Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) came in to close things up and surrendered just one hit in her 2 2/3 innings of work.
Game two was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Alvernia struck for two runs to take the 2-0 lead.
Dina Chiappelli (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) earned a one-out walk and after a fly out freshman
Michelle Hermanns (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) drove a single up the middle to put runners on first and secondwith two outs. Senior
Rachel Evans (Tower City, Pa./Williams Valley) connected for a two-out, two-RBI double that landed just fair down the left field line to give Alvernia the 2-0 lead.
The Crusaders would retain the 2-0 lead until the top of the sixth inning when the Blue Jays struck for five runs. After an Alvernia error allowed Elizabethtown's lead off runner aboard, the Blue Jays would load the bases with a single, a fielder's choice and a hit by pitch. Lindsey Cooper drilled a ground ball that was misplayed by Alvernia's defense that allowed two runs to score. One more run would be walked in and two more came across on a double to the fence from
Courtney Comstock.
The Crusaders could not manage much with their last two at bats going three-up, three-down in the sixth and seventh innings. Dungee was tabbed with the game two loss, despite giving up just one earned run through seven innings of work.
Hermanns had three of Alvernia's six hits of the day, including a double.
Alvernia will return to action on March 23rd when they host non-conference opponent Ursinus at 3:00 p.m.
