Offense Returns In 26-20 Win At Marywood

Smith And Martin Both Go 4-for-7

Scranton, Pa. (Mar. 24, 2010) - Alvernia University (11-4) took advantage of 26 hits and five Marywood University (3-11) errors and held on for a 26-20 win over the Pacers Wednesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Marywood.

Jeff Smith (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) and Reid Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata), batting one-two in the Alvernia lineup, both made a plate appearance in every inning except the eighth and went 4-for-7.  Smith scored three runs and knocked in two while Martin scored five and knocked in five and finished a home run short of the cycle.

Just four days removed from zero runs in 14 innings at Elizabethtown, the Crusaders plated a run in the first, three in the second, eight in the third, and took a 17-2 lead with five runs in the fourth.  They scored in every inning but the eighth.

Marywood answered back with six runs in the fourth inning and over a five-inning stretch, plated 18 runs to pull within three runs at 23-20 entering the ninth.

Alvernia plated three runs in the top of the ninth and reliever Austin Rohrbach (Maxatawny, Pa./Kutztown) set the Pacers down in the ninth.  Rohrbach threw two innings in relief and was the only Crusaders not tagged with at least one run.

Senior Brian Longo (Uncasville, Conn./Montville) also threw two innings of relief and was credited with the win.

Senior Steve Bealer (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) was 3-for-3 with three runs scored.  Nole Saylor (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored.  Steve Medvedick (Coatsville, Pa./Coatsville) and Chris Ray (Exton, Pa./West Chester Henderson) were both 2-for-4.  Nine different players had multi-hit games for the Crusaders.

Alvernia returns to the conference schedule with a trip to Widener University this Friday.
