Chester, Pa. (March 27, 2010) – Alvernia (8-6, 2-2 Comm.) snapped Widener's (11-5, 0-2 Comm.) nine game winning streak with two wins this afternoon in Commonwealth Conference action at Widener. Freshman pitcher
Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) went the distance in the first game allowing just three hits and one unearned run through seven innings for the 5-1 win. Junior starter
Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) took care of business in the second game scattering seven hits over seven innings for the 5-2 win.
The Pride from Widener jumped ahead in the first game in the bottom of the second inning after two walks and an error loaded the bases. After a pop-out,
Astyn DiNorscia came through with an RBI-single through the left side.
Alvernia would answer in the top of the third inning after
Janelle Lynch (Macungie, Pa./Brandywine) connected for a one-out double and came around to score after a bunt and an RBI-double from
Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall).
The game remained tied at one until the top of the sixth inning. Sorrentino led off the inning with her third hit of the day, and quickly advanced to second on a passed ball. Pinch hitter
Megan McCafferty (Millville, NJ/Millville) battled her way aboard the bases with a two-strike infield single. Pitcher Dungee laid down a bunt that would force a Pride error to score Sorrentino and put runners on second and third.
Dina Chiappelli (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) came through with an RBI-single, and a Pride error would allow another run across. Freshman
Michelle Hermanns (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) drilled a sac fly for the fourth run of the inning and the 5-1 lead.
Dungee shut down the Pride through the sixth and seventh inning for her fourth win of the season.
The second game mirrored the first as the Pride score a run in the bottom of the second, but this time the Crusaders battled back for four runs in the top of the third. Pitcher Jensen got the rally started with a one-out single and after a sac from Lynch
Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) knocked in Jensen to tie the game. Sorrentino followed with an RBI-double and
Samantha Geisinger (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) went deep for Alvernia's first homerun of the season to give Alvernia the 4-1 lead.
The Pride battled back and scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Alvernia would get it right back in the top of the seventh thanks to a sac fly from pinch hitter
Angela Cook (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton). Jensen shut down the Widener offense in the bottom of the seventh inning to improve to 4-3 on the season.
Geisinger was 5-for-7 on the day with a homerun, while Sorrentino added a 6-for-8 performance. Geisinger had five extra base hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Sorrentino posted four extra base hits, two RBIs and three runs scored.
