Jensen Throws Gem As Alvernia Sweeps Delaware Valley

Junior Pitcher Allows Just Three Hits, One Unearned Run In Game Two

GAME ONE BOX SCORE
GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (April 13, 2010) – Junior pitcher Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) allowed just three hits and one unearned run in the second game of the day to give Alvernia (16-8) the 2-1 victory and the sweep of Delaware Valley (9-11). In the first game of the day the Crusaders came from behind twice to down the Aggies by a score of 9-5 behind a bases clearing triple from freshman Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville).

Game one got off to a rocky start for Alvernia starter Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) as she surrendered a walk to the lead-off batter, and after recording two outs game up a homerun to Aggie slugger Bethany Pavlik to give Del-Val the early 2-0 lead. Thankfully, the Crusader bats came to life for two runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning. Janelle Lynch (Macungie, Pa./Brandywine) led off the inning with a well-earned walk and Peto followed with a single. After a double steal to put runners on second and third Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) ripped a double to the fence to score two runs.

In the second inning Alvernia took the 3-2 lead with a single from Dungee, a passed ball, a sacrifice bunt and an infield groundout. But the Aggies would come right back to tie the game at three after a one-out walk came around to score one a single and a Crusader error. The Aggies did not stop there as they tagged on two more runs for the 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning. After a fly out, Dungee gave Aggie batter Becky Furman a free pass before inducing a ground out for the second out of the inning. Pavlik stepped up and hit a high fly ball that was misplayed by Alvernia allowing the fourth run to score, and Pavlik would score herself on another single.

Down 5-3 the Crusaders tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly from Michelle Hermanns (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) and an RBI-double from Dina Chiappelli (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg). They would finally plate the go-ahead runs in the sixth inning with a bases loaded triple from Peto.

In the second game of the day Jensen was lights out, with the only Aggie run coming in the top of the first inning on a passed ball. In the second through seventh innings Jensen allowed just two hits. Alvernia tied the game in the bottom of the second inning as Jensen earned a two-out walk and scored on a triple from Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley). They managed to push across the game winner in the bottom of the sixth inning after Peto led off with a bunt single and eventually scored on a double from Hermanns.

Peto was 4-for-6 with four runs scored and three RBIs while Sorrentino was 4-for-7 with a run scored and three RBIs.

Alvernia will face PSU-Berks at home on Thursday April 15th at 3:00pm.
