Reading, Pa. (April 15, 2010) – The Crusaders (18-8) took two from visiting PSU-Berks (10-15) this afternoon in non-conference action. Alvernia downed the Nittany Lions 6-3 in game one behind 12 hits including three from freshman
Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville). In game two, starter
Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) threw her second shut-out of the season while the Crusader bats put up another 12 hits and eight runs in just four innings.
Alvernia took the early 4-0 lead in the first game of the day with a run in the first, two in the second and another in the third.
Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) connected for a sacrifice fly in the first inning, starter
Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) drilled an RBI-triple to the fence in the second inning and scored on an infield groundout in the second inning, while
Dina Chiappelli (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) drove in a run in the third with a sacrifice fly.
The Lions struck for a run of their own in the fourth inning aided by three walks, but Alvernia answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Penn State-Berks went on to score one run in the fifth and sixth innings but the Crusaders would play tight defense to earn the 6-3 victory.
In game two, starter Jensen gave up just five hits in five innings while holding the Nittany Lions scoreless. Alvernia's bats came up with two runs in the first inning, and three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. The Crusaders managed three triples in game two, while Sorrentino, Chiappelli and
Michelle Hermanns (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) all had two hits for Alvernia. Both Chiappelli and Jensen had two RBIs each in the second game. Freshman
Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) knocked in the game-ending eighth run with a line drive double to the fence.
Alvernia will return to action Saturday at noon when they host Commonwealth Conference opponent Arcadia University.
