GAME ONE BOX SCORE
GAME TWO BOX SCORE
Saturday April 24, 2010 (Annville, Pa.) – Alvernia (20-10, 6-6 Comm.) was swept this afternoon at Lebanon Valley College (27-7, 11-1 Comm.) in Commonwealth Conference action. The Dutchmen from Lebanon Valley needed nine innings to down Alvernia 7-5 in the first game of the day, but Alvernia's bats were silent in game two as the Crusaders went down 11-0 in 4.5 innings.
The day did not start kindly for Alvernia as the Dutchmen posted a three-run inning in the bottom of the first off of starter
Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn). Lebanon Valley started the inning with back-to-back hits, and after a strike out followed with two more hits and a walk to plate their three runs.
In the top of the second inning the Crusaders answered right back putting up three runs of their own. After a ground out,
Samantha Geisinger (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) was hit by a pitch to put a runner on first base. After a pop-out for the second out of the inning, Alvernia strung together three straight hits to tie the game at three. Starter Dungee lined a single to left field that snuck past the left fielder to score Geisinger, and
Megan McCafferty (Millville, NJ/Millville) followed with a double to plate Dungee. Back at the top of the order,
Janelle Lynch (Macungie, Pa./Brandywine) kept things going with a single of her own to score McCafferty and tie the game at three.
The score remained knotted at three through the regulation seven innings, and with the international tie breaker rule looming in the tenth inning Alvernia broke the tie in the top of the eighth inning. After a strikeout to start the inning Alvernia's top three batters in the line-up went for three singles in a row and
Michelle Hermanns (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) drove a deep fly to center field to score both Lynch and
Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) who stormed home after an errant throw from the Dutchmen.
Lebanon Valley did not go quietly as they tied the game at five in the bottom of the eighth inning on four hits and eventually pushed across the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out two-run homerun.
The second game of the day got off to the same start as the first, with Lebanon Valley scoring three runs in the first inning. This time the Crusaders were unable to rally back and managed only three hits all game. The Dutchmen exploded for three homeruns and eleven runs through four innings to enact the eight-run rule.
Lynch, Peto and Rhainnon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) were all 2-for-6 on the day.
Alvernia's non-conference game against Ursinus College scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed until May 5th at 3:00pm due to the rain. The Crusaders will return to action on Tuesday April 27th when they travel to Wilkes University.
