Alvernia Falls Short At Wilkes

Crusader Bats Manage Just Nine Hits All Day

GAME ONE BOX SCORE
GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (April 27, 2010) – Alvernia (20-12) was swept at Wilkes (12-20) this afternoon in non-conference action. The Crusader's bats connected for just nine hits through the two games to allow Wilkes the 5-3 and 6-3 victories. Alvernia jumped ahead 3-0 in the first game before falling 5-3 in eight innings and Wilkes rode an early 4-1 lead to the 6-3 second game victory.

In the first game of the day Alvernia jumped out to a comfortable 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning thanks to an RBI-triple from Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville), an RBI-single from Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) and a Wilkes error. The score remained 3-0 in Alvernia's favor until the bottom of the sixth inning when pinch-hitter Cori Saltzer connected for a two-out homerun to tie the game at three. With the eighth inning came the international tie-breaker rule that places a runner on second base. In Alvernia's half of the inning junior Dina Chiappelli (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt that was misplayed by Wilkes to put runners on second and third with nobody out. The Crusaders were unable to push a run across after two strikeouts and a groundout. Wilkes won the game in the bottom of the eighth inning as Gina Steffanelli hit the first pitch of the inning for a homerun to center field.

In the second game both teams put up a run in the first inning and Wilkes followed with three more in the third for the 4-1 lead. Alvernia cut the lead to 4-3 with two runs in the fourth inning, but it was not enough as Wilkes tagged on two more in the bottom of the fourth inning for the 6-3 lead and eventual win.

Sorrentino was 3-for-5 with two walks while game two starter Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) was 2-for-4 with a double.

Alvernia will travel to DeSales on Thursday for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00pm.
