Crusaders Rally For Split With DeSales

Alvernia Erases A Six-Run Deficit In Game One

GAME ONE BOX SCORE
GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Center Valley, Pa. (April 29, 2010) – The Crusaders (21-13) exploded for a six-run third inning in the first game today on their way to rallying back from a 7-1 deficit to defeat DeSales (21-17) 8-7 in game one. The Bulldogs took game two behind a complete game shut-out from Jen Lococo by a score of 4-0.

Alvernia was quick to start the scoring today with a run in the top of the first inning in game one.  Freshman Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) reached on an error, and after a stolen base came around to score on an RBI-single from Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall). The Crusaders' lead was short-lived as the Bulldogs used a walk, a misplayed bunt, a hit and a Crusader error to score three runs of their own in the bottom of the first. DeSales added four more runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the prompt 7-1 lead.

The Crusaders got to work in their half of the third inning stringing together two walks and five hits to put up six runs of their own and tie the game at seven. Pitcher Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) who this game was playing left field, came up big with a two-RBI double to the fence to bring Alvernia within one run and Rachel Evans (Tower City, Pa./Williams Valley) followed with a two-out single to plate the tying run.

Starting pitcher Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) tightened up after Alvernia tied the game, allowing just four hits and shutting out the Bulldogs through the final five innings. The Crusaders managed to push the game-winner across in the top of the sixth inning when Meg McCafferty (Millville, NJ/Millville) connected for a one-out single, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored as the bulldogs misplayed an infield hit from Janelle Lynch (Macungie, Pa./Brandywine).

In the second game of the day, DeSales jumped ahead to a 1-0 lead in the third inning after an error allowed a runner aboard and a deep triple to right field plated their first run of the game. They added two more in the fifth inning and their fourth run in the sixth inning.

The Crusaders were held scoreless through game two, and managed just three hits despite hitting the ball hard through the final four innings. Their best chance to score came in the seventh inning as Dina Chiappelli (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) and Samantha Geisinger (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) connected for back- to-back singles and advanced to second and third on a fielder's choice from Dungee. A ground out and a fly out ended the scoring threat.

Sorrentino was 4-for-8 with a run scored and an RBI, while both Peto and Chiappelli had two hits and a walk.

Alvernia will wrap-up their conference schedule with a home game against Lycoming this Saturday at noon. The Crusaders will need two wins to keep their playoff chances alive.
