Alvernia Comes Back Twice In Second Game

BOX SCORE (Game One)
BOX SCORE (Game Two)

Reading, Pa. (April 6, 2010) – Alvernia (12-6, 4-2 Comm.) relied on some late-inning heroics in the second game on their way to sweeping the cross-town Lions from Albright (6-14, 1-5 Comm.) in Commonwealth Conference action this afternoon at Alvernia. The Crusaders took the first game 3-1 behind freshman pitcher Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and battled back twice to take game two by a score of 6-5.

In the first game of the day Alvernia pushed across a run in the fourth inning as an RBI-single from Janelle Lynch (Brandywine, Pa./Macungie) scored Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) who had reached with a single. The Crusaders added two more in the fifth inning to take the 3-0 lead on a double steal to score Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) and an RBI-single from pitcher Dungee.

The visiting Lions got one back in the top of the sixth inning after an Alvernia error with two outs allowed Kiersten Gilfoy to sneak across. Neither team would score again as Alvernia held on for the 3-1 final. Starter Dungee held the Lions to just four hits and one unearned run.

In the second game of the day the Crusaders again got on the board first, this time in the bottom of the second inning when Michelle Hermanns (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) came around to score on a two-out single from Kitchen.

The Lions battled right back, putting up three runs in the top of the third inning aided by an Alvernia error. The Crusaders wasted no time answering back in their half of the third inning, quickly tying the score at three after Lynch and Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) led off the inning with back-to-back singles and came around to score after a sac bunt and single from Hermanns.

Albright would finally break the 3-3 tie in the top of the sixth inning as they strung together three hits to push one across. The Crusaders again answered right away as Rachel Evans (Tower City, Pa./Williams Valley) reached on an error and came around to score on a pinch-hit RBI-double from Megan McCafferty (Millville, NJ/Millville). Dina Chiappelli (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) traded places with McCafferty with a double of her own to give Alvernia the 5-4 lead heading into the seventh inning.

The Lions kept battling, tying the game at five with a run of their own in the top of the seventh inning, but the Crusaders managed one last rally. Peto led off the inning with a bunt single and stole second on the next pitch. Sorrentino followed with a groundout to advance Peto to third with just one out. Junior catcher Samantha Geisinger (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) then ripped a single through the left side to give Alvernia the 6-5 win and the conference sweep of Albright.

Alvernia will travel to Gwynedd-Mercy on April 8th for a non-conference game at 3:00pm.
