Gwynedd Valley, Pa. (April 8, 2010) – Alvernia (14-8) belted out 42 hits and plated 39 runs on their way to sweeping Gwynedd-Mercy (2-17) 16-3 and 24-0 this afternoon in non-conference action at Gwynedd-Mercy. Freshman
Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./ North Penn) allowed no runs through four innings for the game one win and
Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) threw a complete-game five inning shutout in the second game.
Alvernia got down to business right away in the first game with
Janelle Lynch (Macungie, Pa./Brandywine) stroking the first pitch of the game to left field for a single. The Crusaders put up three more hits in the first inning, including a triple from
Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) on their way to scoring four runs. After a scoreless bottom of the first for the Griffins, Alvernia exploded for eight runs in the second inning fueled by eight more hits. They managed another run in the third, while their final three runs came in the fourth inning. The Griffins staged a small rally in the fifth inning off of reliever
Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) scoring three runs off of four walks and hit by pitch and two fielder's choices.
The second game was more of the same as the Crusaders posted five runs in the first inning highlighted by Sorrentino touching them all on a single that snuck past the left fielder and a triple from freshman
Michelle Hermanns (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill). The tabbed on another three in the second and again exploded for eight runs, this time in the third inning. Alvernia wrapped the game up with another eight runs over the final two innings. Of the 24 runs scored in game two only 14 were earned as the Griffins committed nine errors.
In the offensive explosion today, 13 different Crusaders had hits. Both Sorrentino and Hermanns were 7-for -9 on the day. Sorrentino led the way with eight RBIs, while also scoring seven runs. Lynch was 6-for-7 on the day with six runs scored and catcher
Diane Lightner (Gaithersburg, MD/Holy Cross) was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the first game of the day.
Alvernia will ride their eight-game winning streak to Grantham, Pa. on Saturday when they will face the 2009 National Champion Messiah (#7) squad in a conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00pm.
