Reading, Pa. (May 1, 2010) – Alvernia (22-14, 7-7 Comm.) settled for a split with Lycoming College (14-24, 4-10 Comm.) this afternoon in Commonwealth Conference play to find themselves just out of the playoffs in fifth place. The Crusaders fell 8-4 in ten innings in the first game after taking the early 4-0 lead, and rebounded to take game two 9-2.
Alvernia jumped ahead in game one with a run in the first inning, a run in the third and two runs in the fourth inning for the early 4-0 lead. The Lady Warriors got them all back in the top of the sixth inning putting up a four-spot on five consecutive singles with two outs. The games was pushed into the tenth inning where the International Tie-Breaker rule came into play and Lycoming took advantage to score another four runs. The Crusaders could not manage a key hit through the second half of the game as they left 13 base runners on.
Dina Chiappelli (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) was 3-for-4 on the first game with all four RBIs for Alvernia while
Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) was 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored.
In the second game of day the Crusaders rebounded with 15 hits and nine runs through six innings. They managed a run in the first and exploded for five runs in the third inning to take the 6-0 lead. Lycoming put up two of their own in the fifth inning but Alvernia came back with another three through the final two innings.
Chiappelli was 6-for-8 on the day with seven RBIs, Sorrentino was 4-for-7.
With the loss Alvernia just misses out on a spot in the Commonwealth playoffs as the finished tied with Elizabethtown at 7-7 and the Blue Jays take the tie-breaker as the swept the Crusaders back in March.
Alvernia will host Ursinus at 3:00pm on Wednesday afternoon and hope for an ECAC bid next Monday.
