Game One Box Score
Game Two Box Score
Immaculata, Pa. (Mar. 16, 2011) - Alvernia University (8-0) got two homeruns from
Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) and a homerun from both
Michelle Hermanns (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) and
Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Acad. Sci./Tech) on their way to sweeping Immaculata University (0-4) by scored of 8-5 and 7-6 this afternoon in non-conference action at Immaculata.
The Crusaders jumped on the board early with three runs in the top of the first inning thanks to a two-RBI double from Galanti and fielder's choice later in the inning. Alvernia had appeared to set the tone for the game, but the Mighty Macs answered immediately with three runs to tie the game in the bottom of the first inning. Alvernia went up again 4-3 in the third inning after pitcher
Jennifer Petrilla (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton East) walked to start the inning, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and took advantage of a Mighty Mac error on a fielder's choice to score. Immaculata again answered immediately and tied the score at four in the bottom of the third inning. The fourth inning was a repeat of the third with Alvernia putting up a run with a double from Peto, stolen base and sacrifice fly from Galanti, and Immaculata answering in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at five. The final three innings would be all Alvernia, as reliever
Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) held the Mighty Macs scoreless and Alvernia posted two runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth for the 8-5 lead and eventual win.
The second game of the day was no easier for the Crusaders as they quickly found themselves behind 2-0 after the first inning. A homerun from Galanti in the second cut the gap in half, while a third inning Penk homerun and RBI-single from starter
Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) gave the Crusaders the 3-2 lead. A lead that was, yet again, short lived. The Mighty Macs loaded the bases in the bottom of the third inning off a single and two walks and a grand slam would score four, for the 6-3 lead. The grand slam would be their last runs of the day as starter Jensen shut them down through the fourth and fifth inning. Alvernia's offense got to work right away, with another Penk homerun scoring two in the fourth to cut Immacuata's lead to 6-4. With one out in the top of the fifth Alvernia loaded the bases with singles from
Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island), Peto and Penk.
Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) knocked in the tying run and Galanti followed with a sacrifice fly to push Peto across for the game-winner. The Mighty Macs went in order in the bottom of the fifth which was the last inning of the day due to darkness.
Penk was 4-for-8 with two homeruns and three RBIs while Peto was 5-for-8 with five runs scored and two stolen bases. Galanti added a 3-for-6 effort with a homerun and five RBIs.
Alvernia will return to action in their home opener on March 23rd at 3:00pm against Neumann.
