Reading, Pa. (Mar. 27, 2011) - Alvernia (11-1) got a gem in the circle from senior pitcher
Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) in the second game of the day for a 7-0 win over Neumann University (8-8) after taking the first game 6-4. Jensen shut out the Knights and allowed just two hits through seven innings.
The Knights struck first in game one with a second-inning two-run homerun from
Crystal Perlman to put Neumann up 2-0. Alvernia got one back in the bottom of the third inning as an RBI-double from
Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) scored
Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) who had reached with a two-out double of her own.
Alvernia got the tying and go-ahead runs in the fourth inning as they tacked on three runs for the 4-2 lead.
Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) led-off the inning with a double and
Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Acad. Sci. Tech) followed with a single and advanced on a throw home to put runners at second and third. After a pop-out, Alvernia took advantage of two fielders' choices to plate two more runs, with another run coming on an RBI-single from
Diane Lightner (Gaithersburg, Md./Holy Cross Acad.) for the 4-2 lead.
The Crusaders added two more in the fifth thanks to an RBI-double from Sorrentino and a Knight error to take the 6-2 lead. Neumann battled back with two of their own in the top of the sixth inning and had the tying run at second in the seventh inning but closer
Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) ended the threat with a strikeout.
In the second game of the day Alvernia took the 4-0 lead in the third inning as they batted around their order and connected for five singles, including a two-RBI shot from
Lisa Seidler (Feasterville, Pa./Archbishop Wood). Jensen continued to shut down the Knight's offense as Alvernia added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-RBI triple from Sorrentino and a two-out RBI single from
Dina Chiappelli (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg).
Sorrentino was 4-for-6 with a walk, 3 RBIs and four runs scored. Manowski was 3-for-6 with two runs scored and fellow freshman Seidler was 2-for-3 in game two with two RBIs.
Alvernia returns to action when they host Wesley College Tuesday March 29th at 3:00pm.
