Crusaders Battle For Two More Wins

Alvernia Improves To 6-0 With 6-4 and 8-7 Wins

BOX SCORE (Cedarville)
BOX SCORE (Finlandia)

Clermont, Fl. (Mar. 9, 2011) - Alvernia (6-0) came from behind in their first game of the day for a 6-4 win over Cedarville, and would need eight innings to take care of Finlandia (7-7) by a score of 8-7 this afternoon at the National Training Center College Spring Games.  Freshman Jennifer Petrilla (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton East) earned the win in both games after throwing 6 1/3 innings against Cedarville and closing out the final 2 2/3 innings against Finlandia.

In the opener, the Crusaders quickly found themselves behind 2-0 after the first inning thanks to three two-out singles and two stolen bases from the Yellow Jackets.  Alvernia was not trailing for long as they posted four runs in the top of the second inning.  Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Acad. Sci./Tech) got things started with a double, and after a walk, Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley), Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) and Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) all followed with RBI-singles with Manowski scoring on a passed ball.  The Crusaders added two more in the top of the third on a homerun from Kitchen and an RBI-triple from Manowski.  Petrilla held Cedarville to another run in the fifth and one more in the third, while Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) came in to secure the final three outs.

Alvernia had their work cut out for them in game two against Finlandia as they were down 4-0 by the bottom of the third inning.  They cut the gap in half with two runs in the third on a two-RBI double from Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South), but Finlandia tacked one more on in the fifth for the 5-2 lead.  Alvernia continued to battle with two runs in the bottom of the fifth with RBI singles from Peto and Penk.

Finlandia's bats continued to work Alvernia's pitchers as a two-out, two-RBI double chased reliever Dungee from the game in the top of the sixth and gave Finlandia the 7-4 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.  After a scoreless bottom of the sixth and top of the seventh the Crusaders went to work.

Galantie led off the inning with an 0-2 single up the middle and Manowski and Peto followed suit with singles of their own to load the bases with nobody out.  After a fly out from Penk, Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) lined a single to right center field that easily scored two.  Peto came around to tie the game as Sorrentino drew the throw to second base as she attempted to advance.  Kitchen followed with a triple but Alvernia couldn't manage to push her across for the win.

The eighth inning saw the International Tie-Breaker rule in effect with a runner placed on second to start the inning.  The Crusaders held Finlandia scoreless in their half of the eighth thanks to a fielder's choice, strikeout and fly out.

Alvernia finally took the rain-delayed game 8-7 in their half of the eighth as lead-off batter Petrilla laid down a bunt to force an error.  After an intentional walk and a force out at the plate, Manowski battled through six pitches and was eventually hit by a 1-2 pitch to score the winning run.

Alvernia will face DeSales tomorrow at 9:00am followed by a rematch against Cedarville at 11:00am to wrap-up their week at the NTC Games.
