Crusaders Drop Two At Arcadia

Alvernia Falls 3-6 In Game One, And 5-6 In 8 Innings In Game Two

GAME ONE (Box Score)
GAME TWO (Box Score)

Glenside, Pa. (Apr. 3, 2011) - The Crusaders (11-3, 1-3 Comm.) dropped a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at Arcadia University (12-6, 3-3 Comm.) this afternoon by scores of 3-6 and 5-6 in eight innings.  Alvernia fell behind 3-0 early in both games and were unable to recover.

In the first game of the 3:00pm doubleheader, the Knights from Arcadia put up a three-spot in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a hit batter, two singles, a walk and a Crusader error that plated two runs.  Arcadia stretched their lead to four runs with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.  Alvernia got one back in the fourth inning with an RBI fielder's choice from Dina Chiappelli (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg).  The Crusaders then tightened the game up even more in the fifth with two more runs off a Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) double to bring the score to 3-4.  The Knights put the game out of reach with a two-run homerun for the 6-3 lead, and eventual 6-3 win.

Unfortunately for Alvernia, in game two history repeated itself as the Knights put up three runs, this time in the bottom of the first inning.  The Crusaders battled back, with two runs in the top of the third off a two-run homerun from Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South).  They added another run in the top of the fifth to tie the game at three after Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) singled, stole second and came around to score on a double from Sorrentino.  The 3-3 tie was short lived as the Knights plated two in their half of the fifth for the 5-3 lead.

Alvernia would not go down easy as Penk connected for her second two-run homer of the game to tie it at 5 with two outs in the top of the seventh inning.  That was all Alvernia could muster though, as Arcadia won 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth with a double, followed by a single to score the run.

Alvernia will look to get back on track when they face DeSales at home on Apr. 7th.
