Reading, Pa. (Apr. 6, 2011) - Three straight batters in the Alvernia lineup collected three hits and senior starter
Chuck Nicholas (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) threw six strong innings to lead the Crusaders (17-3) to a 14-0 win over Marywood University (12-7) Wednesay afternoon in non-conference baseball at Angelica Park.
Reid Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata),
Eric Domitrovits (Northampton, Pa./Northampton), and
Tim Ahlquist (Millville, N.J./Millville) each had two-out singles in the first inning and all three added two more hits to their line later in the game. Martin finished with three singles, two runs, and four RBIs. Domitrovits and Ahlquist both put two doubles on the board. Domitrovits went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Ahlquist went 3-for-4 with two runs, a walk, and three RBIs. Alvernia finished with 17 hits as a team.
Alvernia blew the game open with eight runs on seven hits in the third inning. Ahlquist and
Leon Stimpson (Philadelphia, Pa./Malvern Prep) both had two-run hits during the inning.
Nicholas went six innings giving up three hits and four walks with a strikeout. He erased the first Marywood threat in the first inning getting an around-the-horn double play to end the inning.
The Pacers had two on with two out in the third, but Nicholas ended the threat getting the lead runner in a run down.
Rich Collins (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) relieved Nicholas to start the seventh and set down the Pacers in order in each inning to earn his first career save.
Alvernia returns to conference play this weekend at Elizabethtown on Friday.
