BOX SCORE (Game Two)
Reading, Pa. (Apr. 7, 2011) - Senior pitcher
Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ.Delaware Valley) threw a complete-game, three hit shutout as Alvernia (12-4) took game two 2-0 after falling to DeSales (9-7) 2-4 in the opener this afternoon in non-conference action at Angelica Park.
In game one, the Bulldogs got on the board early with a run in the top of the first inning after a single and three walks. They added another for the 2-0 lead in the top of the second after a walk to lead off the inning, a sacrifce bunt and RBI-double to fence from
Kate Steiner. The Crusaders got a run back in the bottom of the third as
Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) connected for a two-out single and came around to score as she stole home on a double steal. Alvernia tied the game at two in the bottom of the fifth after
Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) led off the inning with a single and reliever
Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) drilled a two-out double to the fence to score Kitchen all the way from first. DeSales pushed across the game-winner and insurance run in the top of the seventh off four singles and a sacrifice fly.
The second game of the day proved to be a pitchers' dual as both teams were held scoreless until Alvernia broke through for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Manowski led off the inning with a bunt single and
Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) followed with a reach-on-error as her sacrifice bunt attempt forced an overthrow at first to put runners on the corners with nobody out. An infield ground out advanced Peto to second base to put runners at second and third with one out for
Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall). Sorrentino grounded to the thirdbasemen, but Manowski was going hard on the hit and made it home safely to give Alvernia the 1-0 lead. A two-out single from
Dina Chiappelli (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) plated another run to put Alvernia up 2-0 heading into the seventh. The Bulldogs managed two of their three hits in the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough as Jensen got out of trouble with two pop-outs.
Alvernia will return to action when they travel to Elizabethtown for a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader on Sat. Apr. 9 beginning at 1pm
