Elizabethtown, Pa. (Apr. 9, 2011) - Alvernia (13-5, 2-4 Comm.) put up 12 hits on their way to winning game two 9-4, after dropping the opener 3-5 this afternoon at Elizabethtown College (13-12, 3-6 Comm.) in Commonwealth Conference action. Senior #Michelle Jensen# (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) earned her fifth win of the season, allowing just four hits through seven innings in the second game of the day.
The Crusaders came out strong and put up three runs in the top of the first inning of game one with a two-out RBI-single from
Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) and another two-out hit, a two-RBI double from
Michelle Hermanns (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West). The Crusaders' lead was short lived as the Blue Jays plated five runs in their half of the first inning. The first four batters walked, the fifth was hit by a pitch before reliever
Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) entered the game. Dungee struck out the next batter and induced a pop-out before a two-out single blooped into center field to plate two and give Etown the 5-3 lead. Neither team threatened much through the rest of the game and the first inning score would be the final score.
Alvernia fared better in game two, plating a run in the second inning, and three more in the third inning with an RBI-single from
Dina Chiappelli (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg), and another Hermanns two-out, two-RBI double. Etown got one back in the bottom of the third, after a two-out triple from
Courtney Comstock and RBI-single from
Whitney Breneman to bring the score to 4-1 in favor of Alvernia.
The Crusaders tagged on two more in the top of the sixth to take the 6-1 lead as
Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) led-off the inning with a single,
Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) followed with a single of her own and both came around to score on a single from
Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall). The Blue Jays got two back in their half of the sixth to bring the score to 6-3, but Alvernia plated three more in the top of the seventh thanks to an RBI-triple from Manowski, RBI-single from Peto and RBI-double from Sorrentino to put the game out of reach.
Alvernia hosts Eastern University for a non-conference doubleheader this Tues. Apr. 12th at 3:00pm.
