Bulldogs Post Three-Run Eighth To Advance In ECAC Tournament

BOX SCORE

Reading, PA (May 14, 2011) – The third seeded DeSales University softball team (24-13) scored three runs without a hit in the top of the eighth inning en route to a 4-2 win over second seeded Alvernia University (22-12) in the second round of the ECAC South Region Tournament hosted by Alvernia at Angelica Park.

After both teams plated just one run in the first seven innings the international tiebreaker rule was implemented in the eighth inning putting a runner on second base to start each frame. In DeSales' half, senior Sharon Yudt dropped a sacrifice bunt but was safe on a fielder's choice as freshman Courtney McKenna beat the throw to third base.

Junior Brianna Chilcoat followed with a sacrifice fly scoring McKenna after Yudt stole second base. Senior Kate Steiner then walked and stole second putting runners on second and third with one out. A wild pitch scored Yudt and Steiner moved to third and later scored on an RBI groundout from senior Kristin Schultz.

Alvernia got one run in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly from freshman Samantha Penk scoring freshman Jennifer Petrilla.

DSU led 1-0 on an RBI triple from junior Christine Petrilla scoring senior Jen Lococo and the Crusaders tied the game at one on a solo home run from sophomore Michelle Hermanns to lead off home half of the fifth inning.

C. Petrilla earned the win, her fourth of the season, with four innings of one-hit ball, striking out two. She also had three hits and an RBI in the win. Steiner had two hits and scored once and Schultz equaled Petrilla's three hits for the Bulldogs.

J. Petrilla took the loss to fall to 7-4 on the year, totaling four innings allowing six hits and two earned runs. Sophomore Miranda Peto had two hits for Alvernia.
