Crusaders Handle Hood, Playoff Hopes Alive

Alvernia Defeats The Blazers 3-0

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 20, 2012) - Alvernia University (8-6-3, 3-4) got goals from three different players as they defeated visiting Hood College (3-9-2, 0-7) 3-0 Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference action.  The Crusaders outshot the Blazers 12-6, while both teams earned three corner kicks.

Alvernia got on the board with a goal from Michael Andrei (Reading, Pa./Exeter), his third of the season. Andrei was assisted by Nate Swarr (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) and gave Alvernia the 1-0 lead in the 37th minute.  20 minutes later, in the 57th minute, Kyle Martyn (Media, Pa./Penncrest) got his seventh goal of the season as he recovered a rebound and sent a bullet back in past the goalkeeper.  Swarr added one of his own, his first of the season, in the 67th minute to put Alvernia up 3-0.

Crusader keeper Ben Diller (Etters, Pa./Red Land) needed just two saves, both in the second half, to post his seventh shutout of the season.

With the win over Hood, Alvernia's playoffs hopes remain alive with two conference games left.  They will travel to Albright on Oct. 23rd and travel to Stevenson on Oct. 27th.
