Wolfe Throws One-Hitter As Alvernia Sweeps

Crusaders Take Two From Immaculata

Reading, Pa. (Mar. 13, 2012) - Freshman Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) threw a shutout and held Immaculata (2-6) to just one hit as Alvernia (8-2) took game two by a score of 8-0 in six innings.  Game one was an extra inning affair that saw the Crusaders score three runs in the eighth inning for the 5-4 win.

In the first game of the afternoon Alvernia got on the board early with a run in the first off an RBI double from Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) to score Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) who reached with a walk.  Thye Crusaders added another for the 2-0 lead in the fourth inning as Felicia McKenna reached with a double and came around to score on a double from Deanna Dungee.

The Mighty Macs got both runs back in the top of the fifth on two hits a walk and a Crusader error.  After a scoreless six and seventh inning the game would head to the eighth inning where the international tie-breaker would be in effect.  Immaculata managed two runs on two outs in the eighth, aided by two bloopers to give Alvernia some work to do in the bottom of the eighth.  With Peto placed on second, penk ripped a single up the middle to get things going.  An infield ground ball scored Peto after a risky run down and left Alvernia with runners on second and third with nobody out.  A single from Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) scored the tying run, and a sacrifice fly from McKenna plated the game-winner.

Game two was a more comfortable affair for Alvernia as they put up four runs in the first, three in the second and pushed across the game-ending eighth run in the sixth inning.  Wolfe took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before the Mighty Macs managed a single to start the inning.

Senior catcher Diane Lightner (Gaithersburg, Md./Acad. of the Holy Cross) was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, Penk had three hits on the day with two RBIs and a run scored and McKenna was 2-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBIs including the game one winner.

Alvernia hosts PSU-Berks on Thursday March 15th for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00pm.
