Orlando, Fl. (Mar. 7, 2012) - Junior pitcher
Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) threw her third shutout of the week to earn the 4-0 win in game one, and freshman
Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) followed with a shutout of her own for the 10-0 game two win over PSU-Hazelton this afternoon at the Disney Spring Training Tournament at the ESPN Wide World of Sports. With the sweep Alvernia improves to 6-0 on the season.
The Crusaders were slow to start in game one, scoring all four of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. After a reach on error from
Jacklyn Torres (Colonia, NJ/ Colonia),
Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) reached on a bunt single and Torres advanced all the way to third. A stolen base from Manowski put runners on second and third with none out. After a pop-out and a strike-out,
Shannon Grim (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) drove a single up the middle to score two.
Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) then drilled a triple to right center to score Grim, and freshman
Felicia McKenna followed with another single to score Kitchen.
Dungee held the Nittany Lions scoreless through seven and struck out eight-including the final three outs for her third win of the season. Manowski was 3-for-3 with a run scored while Grim and McKenna were both 2-for-3.
Alvernia got down to business in a much more prompt manner in game two, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning thanks to three walks and highlighted by a two-RBI single from
Diane Lightner (Gaithersburg, Md./Acad. of the Holy Cross). The Crusaders added two more in the second of an RBI single from Grim and a fielder's choice from McKenna that scored another. A deep double from Torres plated a run in the third, and RBI hits from
Alicia Buchman (Alburtis, Pa./Emmaus) and Lightner added two more in the fourth. Alvernia scored their tenth run in the fifth inning as Mirando Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) crossed on a wild pitch.
Wolfe allowed just one hit through five innings to earn her first career win. Lightner was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Peto was 1-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored in game two.
Alvernia concludes their spring training trip with a doubleheader against Meredith College (8-6) tomorrow beginning at 9am.
