Dungee And Wolfe Toss Shutout Sweep At Dickinson

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 Carlisle, Pa. (April 12, 2012) - Junior pitcher Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) threw a complete-game shut out in the first game, and freshman pitcher Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) followed with a shutout of her own as Alvernia (24-2) swept host Dickinson College (7-21) by scores of 6-0 and 7-0 this evening in non-conference action. With the win, Dungee improves to 8-1 and Wolfe goes to 13-0 on the season.

In the first game, Alvernia got started in the top of the third inning as they loaded the bases on two walks and an error. With two out, Shannon Grim (Williamstown, NJ/ Williamstown) drove a base-clearing triple over the rightfielder's head to give Alvernia the 3-0 lead. They added another in the fifth off an RBI-double from Grim, and two more in the sixth off RBI-hits from Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) and Miranda Peto (Phoenxville, Pa./Phoenixville). Dungee scattered just five hits and struck out seven to preserve the 6-0 win.

In the second game of the day, under the lights, Alvernia posted two runs in the top of the first with help from two Red Devil errors and an RBI-single from Diane Lightner (Gaithersburg, Md./ Acad. of the Holy Cross). In the third inning, two singles and a sacrifice fly from Lightner plated another run, and Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Md./Pleasant Valley) went deep in the fifth inning to put Alvernia up 4-0. The Crusaders added an insurance run in the sixth as Jacklyn Torres (Colonia, NJ/Colonia) came around to score on a Manowski single after blasting a triple to right field. Two more runs in the seventh inning from Grim and Kitchen gave Alvernia the healthy 7-0 win. Wolfe scattered just four hits through her seven innings of work, allowing just three Red Devils to reach second base.

Grim was 4-for-7 with four RBIs and two runs scored through both games. Kitchen was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI in game two, while Lightner and Manowski both added two hits in the nightcap with Lightner knocking in three.

Alvernia travels to Lebanon Valley for a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader on Sat. April 14 beginning at 1:00pm.
