Crusaders Let Two Get Away At Neumann

Aston, Pa. (April 17, 2012) - Alvernia (24-6) dropped two non-conference games this afternoon to Neumann College (15-13) by scores of 11-9 and 2-1.  Alvernia took the early 6-0 lead in the first game but were unable to hold on for the win, and the Knights pushed across the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh in game two.
 
To start game one, Miranda Peto (Phownixville, Pa./Phoenixville) led off the top of the first with an infield single, and Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) followed with a walk.  After a double steal, Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) drilled a high homerun over the left field fence to put Alvernia up 3-0.  After a strikeout, starting pitcher Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) reached second on a Knight error, and Amanda Galanti (Lincroft, NJ/Marine Acad. or Sci./Tech.) connected for her first homerun the year to give Alvernia the quick 5-0 lead.
 
Another run in the second inning off a sacrific fly from Shannon Grim (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) put Alvernia up 6-0 heading into the bottom of the second.  The Knights started their comeback with five runs in the third inning, chasing starter Dungee from the game.  Alvernia plated two more in the fourth of a two-RBI single from Penk, for the 8-5 lead and another in the sixth for the 9-5 lead.
 
The Knights hit relief pitcher Brittanie Wolfe for six runs in the bottom of the sixth for an 11-9 lead that wold stick through the seventh. 
 
In game two, the Knights went up 1-0 in the bottom of the second, and Alvernia evened it up with an RBI-single from Peto in the top of the sixth inning.  Neumann plated the game-winner on a two out single to left field in the bottom of the seventh.
 
Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) was 3-for-6 with three runs scored and two stolen bases.  Peto, Grim and Kitchen all had a hit in each game.
 
Alvernia will look to get back on the winning track when they travel to Messiah College for a make-up Commonwealth Conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30pm.
