BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

Reading, Pa. (April 24, 2012) - Junior pitcher Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) struck out seven and threw a complete-game shutout as Alvernia (28-8) defeated visiting Ursinus College (20-15) by a score of 2-0 in game one this afternoon in non-conference action at Angelica Park.  Freshman Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) followed Dungee's lead with a complete-game shutout of her own, leading Alvernia to a 6-0 win in game two.

The first game of the doubleheader was a pitcher's duel, with neither team able to manage much offense.  Dungee scattered just four hits, while the Crusaders managed just three.  Alvernia did their damage in the bottom of the sixth inning, putting up two runs and holding on for the 2-0 win.  Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) led-off the sixth with a triple to left field, and after a strike out, Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) laid down a squeeze bunt which was misplayed by the Bears.  At the end of the play, Manowski had scored easily, Penk was on third and Ursinus was charged with two errors.  Penk crossed the plate with a single up the middle from Shannon Grim (Wiliamstown, NJ/Williamstown).  Dungee retired the Bears in order in the top of the seventh to preserve the 2-0 win.

Manowski was 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored, while Grim accounted for Alvernia's only other hit.

In the nightcap, the game was scoreless through three innings before Alvernia put up a three-spot in the bottom of the fourth.  Grim got things going with a one-out single, and Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Saylorsburg) followed with a single of her own.  Diane Lightner (Gaithersburg, Md./Acad. of the Holy Cross) then drilled a double to the right field fence to score Grim, and Kitchen and Lightner both came around to score on a two-out, two-RBI single from Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Acad. of Sci./Tech.).  The Crusaders added two more in the fifth after back-to-back walks to Manowski and Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville), and a sacrifice bunt from Penk put runners at second and third.  Another squeeze bunt from Alvernia, this time from Grim, plated Manowski, while Grim scored on a fielder's choice from Kitchen.  Another run in the sixth came off an RBI-single from Manowski to give Alvernia the 6-0 cushion.  Wolfe held off the Bears in the seventh for her 16th win of the season.

In game two Lightner was 3-for-3 with three doubles, two runs scored and an RBI.  Manowski was 1-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI.

The Crusaders return to action on Sat. April 29 as they travel to Widener for their final regular-season conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00pm.
