BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

Chester, Pa. (April 28, 2012) - Alvernia (30-8, 10-4 Comm.) exploded for five homeruns, 25 hits and 19 runs as they swept host Widener (22-18, 5-9 Comm.) this afternoon in Commonwealth Conference action.  Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) allowed just one run for the 8-1 win in game one, while Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) came in to relieve Wolfe in game two and earned the 11-2, five-inning win.

The Crusaders didn't waste any time getting down to business, with three runs in the top of the first inning.  Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) reached on an error to open the game, and six singles later Alvernia had batted through the order and was up 3-0.  Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) connected for a two-RBI single, and Diane Lightner (Gaithersburg, Md./Acad. of the Holy Cross) knocked in another with a single to right field.

Alvernia added another in the second with a sacrifice fly from Lightner, and two more in the third off a two-run dinger from Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Acad. of Sci./Tech.), her second of the season.  Kitchen scored in the fourth after a lead-off double, fielder's choice and illegal pitch, and Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Lincroft) knocked in Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) in the fifth to conclude Alvernia's scoring.

Wolfe earned her 17th win of the season, scattering just seven hits and one run through seven innings.

Alvernia struck again for three runs in the top of the first in game two thanks to a three-run homerun from Lightner.  This time, the Pride got two back in their half of the inning with four singles.  The Crusaders answered with six in the third for the 9-2 lead.  A single from Shannon Grim (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) led-off the inning, and after two outs Alvernia strung together a walk, a reach-on-error to score a run and an RBI single from Jacklyn Torres (Colonia, NJ/Colonia) to score another run.  Manowski followed with her first career homerun, a three-run shot, and Peto, not to be outdone, then blasted her first career homerun to put Alvernia up 9-2.  Torres put the game away with a two-run homerun, her first of the season, in the top of the fifth to put Alvernia up 11-2.  Dungee earned her 10th win of the season, holding the Pride scoreless through four innings and allowing just three hits.

Torres was 4-for-7 with a homerun and three RBIs.  Peto, Grim, Lightner, Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and Galanti all had three hits on the day, while Lightner led the way with five RBIs.

Alvernia will travel to DeSales in a make-up game on Tuesday May 1st for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30pm.
