Crusaders Sweep Eastern 5-0, 10-1 In Five Innings

Reading, Pa. (April 3, 2012) - Freshman Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) improved to 10-0 as she allowed just three hits as Alvernia (20-2) defeated Eastern (12-9-1) by a score of 5-0 in game one.  In game two, Alvernia belted two homeruns and plated ten runs en route to a five-inning 10-1 win.  Junior Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) earned the win in game two, improving to 7-1.

In game one, Alvernia got on the board in the top of the third thanks to a one-out double from Jacklyn Torres (Colonia, NJ/Colonia) and a single up the middle from Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island).  They added another in the fourth with an RBI-single from Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, Pa./Williamstown) that scored Danielle Kitchen who had doubled to the fence with one out.  The Crusaders added three insurance runs in the fifth as Manowski got things started with a single, Peto reached on a failed fielder's choice and Shannon Grim (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and Kitchen both smacked RBI-doubles.  Wolfe preserved the 5-0 lead, surrendering just three hits all game.

In the nightcap, the Crusaders got started early with three runs in the top of the first.  Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) led off the inning with a single up the middle and after a reach on error, Peto scored on a single from Grim.  Grim advanced to second on the throw home after Peto, and a passed ball plus an error scored two for Alvernia.  A two-run homerun from Kitchen plated two more in the third for the 5-0 lead, and three more runs in the fourth gave Alvernia a comfortable eight-run lead.  Eastern pushed one across in their half of the fourth to cut the lead to 8-1, but Diane Lighter (Gaithersburg, Md./ Acad. of the Holy Cross) erased that with a lead off homer to centerfield for the 9-1 lead and Manowski scored the tenth run on a fielder's choice.

Manowski was 4-for-6 with two runs scored, Grim was 3-for-6 with two doubles, four runs scored and three RBIs, while Kitchen had two doubles, a homerun and five RBIs.

Alvernia returns to action on Thursday April 5 at 3pm when they host Albright College in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader beginning at 3pm.
