BOX SCORE 2 Reading, Pa. (April 5, 2012) - The Crusaders (22-2, 6-0 Comm.) swept the visiting Lions from Albright (4-12, 0-6 Comm.) this afternoon in Commonwealth Conference action. Game one was a narrow 1-0 affair that saw Alvernia push across the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh. Alvernia took game two 10-2 in 4.5 innings.
In game one, starting pitcher
Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) threw seven shutout innings and allowed just four hits to improve to 11-0 on the season. The Crusader bats were also absent as they managed just three hits all game. Neither team was able to manage much offense, with Alvernia's best chance coming in the third inning when they loaded the bases after two strikeouts, but a fielder's choice ended the threat.
Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) led-off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single, and after an errant throw found herself on third base. After a reach-on-error from
Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) that failed to plate McKenna, McKenna eventually came across on an illegal pitch to give Alvernia the 1-0 victory.
The Lions bounced back in game two, taking the 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning off of three hits and one Crusader error. Alvernia took the lead back as they plated three runs in their half of the third with RBI-hits from
Shannon Grim (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and McKenna. Alvernia then exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning for the 10-2 lead.
Diane Lightner (Gaithersburg, Md./Acad. of the Holy Cross) led-off the inning with a solid single, and after a fielder's choice, a single from
Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) put runners at first and second with one out. Alvernia then connected for six straight hits, including a two-RBI double from McKenna to take the eight-run lead heading into the fifth. Relief pitcher Dungee shut down the Lions in the top of the fifth, aided by a double play from Manowski.
McKenna was 4-for-6 with three RBIs and one run scored, Grim was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs and Lightner was 2-for-5 with an RBI.
The Crusaders return to action as they travel to Dickinson College on Thurs. April 12 for a non-conference double header beginning at 5:00pm.
