Alvernia Falls 3-1 To Top Seeded Messiah

Grantham, Pa. (May 4, 2012) - The top-seeded Messiah Falcons (35-6) defeated Alvernia (33-9) this afternoon in the winner's bracket match-up of the Commonwealth Championships by a score of 3-1. The Crusaders took the early 1-0 lead, but Messiah rallied for the next three runs for the win. Messiah advances into the championship game, while Alvernia will face the winner of Lebanon Valley vs. Elizabethtown tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.

Diane Lightner (Gaithersburg, Md./Acad. of the Holy Cross) led-off the second with a single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a passed ball. With two outs and Lightner on third, Jacklyn Torres (Colonia, NJ/Colonia) knocked in her fellow senior, sending a single to left center to put Alvernia up 1-0.

The Falcons tied the game with three singles in the bottom of the third, and went ahead on a passed ball in the fifth. A sixth-inning homerun put them up 3-1 for good.

Shannon Grim (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown), Lightner and Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) all had two hits for Alvernia.
