BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

Reading, Pa. (March 28, 2013) - Freshman Rachel Fritz (Kenhorst, Pa./Governor Mifflin) blasted a grand slam and a two-run homerun in the second game as Alvernia swept visiting Widener University (6-8, 1-5) this afternoon in Commonwealth Conference action at Angelica Park.  Alvernia (15-3, 6-0) took game one 12-4 in six innings and followed that with a 9-0, 4.5 inning victory in the second game.

In the opener, Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) led-off the first with a walk, and after a double from Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Acad. Sci./Tech) to put Alvernia up 1-0.  The Pride answered right back with a run in the top of the second with a single and a long double.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Alvernia exploded for five runs to take the 6-1 lead.  After a walk that was erased by a double play, Briana Coan (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) connected for a single and Aly Shilling (Blue Bell, Pa./Christopher Dock) followed with a double to right center field.  A two-strike single down the right field line from Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) scored both runs, and Peto blasted an 0-2 pitch over the left field fence to score two more.  Alvernia wasn't done yet as Penk followed with a single and Galanti knocked her in with a triple to center field to put Alvernia up 6-1.

The Pride managed a rally of their own in the top of the sixth, putting up three runs on three hits and a walk to bring the game within two, 6-4 for Alvernia.

The Crusaders went back to work in the bottom of the sixth and plated six runs to end the game 12-4.  A reach-on-error from Manowski got things started, a double from Peto put runners on second and third and Penk brought them both in with a double of her own.  After a groundout, Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) scored Penk on a fielder's choice to make it 9-4 for Alvernia.  A single and three more doubles plated the final three runs for Alvernia, with Manowski delivering the game-ending RBI-double to left field.

Sophomore pitcher Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) earned the win, allowing seven hits through six innings to improve to 6-3.

In game two, Alvernia went up 4-0 on a grand slam from Fritz in the third inning.  After a strikeout and a flyout, Galanti walked, Kitchen reached-on-error and Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) singled to load the bases.  Fritz took the first pitch she saw and deposited it over the left field fence.  Alvernia added five more runs in the bottom of the fourth with RBI-doubles from Penk and Kitchen, and a two-run homerun from Fritz.

Senior Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) improved to 9-0, allowing just two hits, both in the second inning through five innings.

Fritz, Penk and Coan were all 4-for-6 on the day.  Fritz had two homeruns, a double and seven RBIs, Penk had three doubles and three runs scored.  Galanti was 2-for-3 with three walks.
