BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

Kissimmee, Fl (March 6, 2013) - Junior Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) and freshman Breanna Worrell (Wenonah, NJ/Deptford Township) both hit grand slams in the sixth inning of game two as Alvernia posted two wins on Wednesday. Alvernia took the opener over Concordia (2-3) 11-5, and followed that with a 12-9 win against Illinois College (1-4), aided by the sixth-inning grand slams.

In game one, Alvernia got on the board quickly with three runs in the bottom of the first without a hit thanks to some crafty baserunning. Concordia answered back right away, tying the game at three in the top of the second with three hits and one Crusader error. Alvernia went ahead 4-3 with an RBI-single from Peto in the bottom of the second to knock in Aly Shilling (Blue Bell, Pa./Christopher Dock) who had opened the inning with a single. Concordia, took the 5-4 lead with two unearned runs in the top of the fifth after the first two batters of the inning reached on fielding errors. The Crusaders went back to work in their half of the fifth with seven runs, highlighted by a three-run home run from freshman Rachel Fritz (Kenhorst, Pa./Governor Mifflin).

Sophomore pitcher Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) improved to 3-0 on the season, surrendering just one earned run through seven complete innings.

In the second game of the day, against Illinois, Alvernia again scored in the first inning. This time it was the top of the first with two runs thanks to a sacrifice fly from Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) and a fielder's choice RBI from Worrell. Again, to the displeasure of Alvernia, they saw their opponent come back right away as Illinois plated two unearned runs in the bottom of the first. Illinois took the 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a squeeze bunt that just eluded pitcher Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn). The Crusaders tied it at three in the top of the fifth after Peto led off with a single, stole second and scored on a double to the fence from Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South).

With the game tied at three headed into the sixth Alvernia put up a huge nine-run inning to take the 12-3 lead. A lead-off walk, fielder's choice, single from Fritz and reach on error loaded the base for Peto who drilled the first pitch she saw deep over the left field fence. A walk and two singles later, freshman Worrell did the same thing to make it 11-3. Alvernia tagged on one more after an Illinois error allowed Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Acad. Sci./Tech.) to score. Galanti reached with a single after Worrell's grand slam.

Illinois rallied for four in the sixth to prevent the eight-run mercy ruled game, and two more in the seventh, but Wolfe, who was in in relief of Dungee was able to get the final six outs. Dungee gave up no earned runs and improves to 3-0 on the season.

Peto was 6-for-7 with six RBIs and five runs scored.  Fritz was 4-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored.  Penk was 4-for-5 against Illinois with an RBI and a run scored.

Alvernia wraps-up their Rebel Spring Games Tournament tomorrow with games at 11:00am against Westminster and 3:00pm against Muskingum.
