Crusaders Split On Final Day At Rebel Spring Games

Alvernia Beats Westminster 4-0, Falls To Muskingum 7-5

March 7, 2013 (Kissimmee, Fl.) - Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) threw a seven-inning shut-out and Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) belted a two-run homerun as Alvernia (7-1) took their first game of the day 4-0 over Westminster (2-5). The Crusaders fell in game two 7-5 to Muskingum University (4-3) to suffer their first loss of the season.

In game one, Dungee scattered just five hits through seven innings, striking out four and walking just one to record her first shutout of the season. Alvernia broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth with an RBI-single from Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, Pa./Williamstown) to score Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) who led off the inning with a single up the middle. Kitchen scored again, this time on a fielder's choice and a two-base error in the sixth inning to put Alvernia up 2-0. In the top of the seventh, after a one-out single from Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) Penk blasted a homerun over the left-center field fence to give Alvernia some insurance and the 4-0 lead. Dungee preserved the lead through the seventh for her fourth win of the season.

In game two, Muskingum put up two quick runs in the top of the first inning and Alvernia answered with one of their own with an RBI-single from Kitchen to score Penk. Alvernia went up 4-2 in the bottom of the third as Peto led off with a double and Penk followed with a single. After a strikeout, Kitchen reached on an error to score Peto, and Penk came across on an infield groundout. Muskingum got one back to make it 4-3 in the top of the fourth, but Alvernia answered with one run in their half of the fourth with an RBI-single from Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island). Muskingum tied it with two runs in the fifth, and went ahead for good with two more runs in the sixth.

Kitchen was 4-for-7 on the day with two RBIs and two runs scored. Penk was 4-for-8 on the day with a homrun, two RBIs and three runs scored.

Alvernia concludes their spring break trip to the Rebel Spring Games at 7-1 and will return to action on Tues. March 12th at Immaculata at 3:00pm. Their conference-opener is Sat. March 16th at Stevenson and their home opener is Tues. March 19th against Lebanon Valley.
