Reading, Pa. (April 10, 2013) - Alvernia University (24-4) swept visiting Eastern University (7-21) this afternoon in non-conference action. The Crusaders managed six hits and three runs in the opener for the 3-0 win, and followed that with a 8-0 mercy-ruled five-inning game.
Pitcher
Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) earned the win in game one, scattering just three hits through seven innings of work and not allowing a baserunner to second base all game. Alvernia put up two runs in the third for the 2-0 lead on an Eagle error and RBI-single from
Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Acad. Sci./Tech.). They added another in the fourth on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly from
Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island).
In the second game of the day, Alvernia plated a run in the bottom of the first with another RBI-single from Galanti to score
Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) who had led-off the inning with a reach-on-error. Three more runs in the third put Alvernia up 4-0.
Rachel Fritz (Kenhorst, Pa./Governor Mifflin) led-off the inning with a single and after a walk and a fielder's choice the bases were loaded. Manowski singled up the middle to score two, and another came across on an Eagle error. The Crusaders ended the game with four runs in the fifth inning, all coming with two outs. After two quick groundouts, Fritz managed a reach-on-error and
Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) followed with a deep double to score Fritz. Another double, this time one off the top of the fence in center field from
Aly Shilling (Blue Bell, Pa./Christopher Dock) scored McKenna to make it 6-0. Manowski followed with a walk and another Eastern error plated a run and put runners on second and third.
Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) ended the game with a single through the left side to score Shilling.
Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) improved to 14-0 on the season, allowing just four hits through five innings of work.
Galanti was 4-for-6 with a triple and two RBIs, while Fritz was 3-for-5 on the day with three runs scored.
Alvernia will host Hood College for senior day on Saturday April 13th for a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00pm.
