Reading, Pa. (April 13, 2013) - Alvernia pounded out 27 hits, including a 6-for-7 performance from Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) as they defeated Hood College (17-12, 5-4) by scores of 10-2 and 11-2 Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference action.  Alvernia (26-4, 11-1) took care of both games in five-innings thanks to the eight-run rule.

In the opener, Alvernia put up three runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to an RBI-single from Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) to score Peto who led off the inning with a single.  The other two runs both came on infield fielder's choices, where Hood opted for the sure out instead of the play at the plate.  Penk knocked in Peto again in the second inning, and Shannon Grim (Williamstown,NJ/Williamstown) brought in a run in the third to make it 5-0 Alvernia.

Hood got two back in the top of the fourth, but Alvernia answered right back with two in the bottom of the fourth for the 8-2 lead.  Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) led off the fourth with a single, and Peto followed with another single.  After a fielder's choice that advance both runners, Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Acad. Sci./Tech.) knocked in both runs with a single to right field.  Three more runs in the bottom of the fifth ended the game due to the eight-run rule.  Grim reached-on-error to open the inning, Aly Shilling (Blue Bell, Pa./Christopher Dock) followed with a single, and Manowski singled to push a run across.  A double-steal plated Shilling, and Peto knocked in Manowski to end the game at 10-2.

Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) improved to 11-4 with a complete game performance.  She scattered just five hits through five innings for the win.

In the second game of the day, Alvernia again went ahead early with a run in the first and two runs in the second for the 3-0 lead.  Penk knocked in Peto who had led off the game with a double for Alvernia's first run, and Manowski knocked in Shilling with a stand-up triple in the second, and came around to score on a wild pitch for the 3-0 lead.

The Crusaders exploded for eight runs in the third inning for the 11-0 lead, highlighted by two-RBI doubles from both Shilling and Galanti.  Alvernia connected for five singles and four doubles in the third inning.

Hood managed two runs in the top of the fourth, but Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) shut them down in the fifth to preserve the five-inning 11-2 win.

Dungee improved to 15-0, surrendering just three hits and two unearned runs through five innings.
