Crusaders Drop Two To DeSales

Alvernia Falls 3-2 Then 4-3

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

Reading, Pa. (April 18, 2013) - Alvernia (28-6) dropped two one-run games to visiting DeSales (21-6-1) by scores of 3-2 and 4-3 Thursday afternoon in non-conference action.  The Bulldogs went up 3-0 in the opener and held on for the win, and again went up 3-0 in game two before Alvernia rallied to tie it at three.  DeSales plated a run in the top of the seventh for the win.

In game one, DeSales scored all three of their runs in the top of the second inning.  A reach-on-error started the inning, and after a strikeout a double put runners on the corners.  A walk loaded the bases, followed by a pop-out.  But a two-out double to centerfield cleared the bases for the Bulldogs.

Alvernia got two back in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a double from Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Acad. Sci./Tech.), a triple from Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) and an RBI-single from Rachel Fritz (Kenhorst, Pa./Governor Mifflin).  That was all Alvernia could manage despite out-hitting DeSales 12-7 and leaving 11 runners on base.

In game two DeSales went up 3-0 with two runs in the third and a run in the fourth.  The Crusaders tied it at three with three runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to two-out RBI hits from Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville), Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) and Galanti.  The game stayed tied at three until DeSales went up 4-3 in the top of the seventh.  The Crusaders loaded the bases with just one out in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to push a run across.

Galanti was 4-for-5 with three walks, while Penk and Peto were both 3-for-7.

Alvernia is back in action with a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at Albright on Saturday, April 20th at 1:00pm.
