Reading, Pa. (April 20, 2013) - The Crusader softball squad improved to 30-6 on the season with a 13-1 Commonwealth Conference record with a sweep over cross-town foe Albright College (9-24, 2-13) Saturday afternoon at Albright. Alvernia took game one 7-2, and followed that with a 16-7 victory in the second game.
In the opener, Alvernia fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first after a double and a homerun from the Lions. The Crusaders answered back quickly in the top of the third with three runs for the 3-2 lead.
Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) led off the inning with a single, and after a line-out,
Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) reached on an error and
Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Acad. Sci./Tech) followed with a walk to load the bases. A fielder's choice plated Manowski, and the other two runns scored on a single passed ball.
The game remained 3-2 until the top of the seventh when Alvernia managed four insurance runs.
Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) led off with a single, and after an out, Manoski followed with a single to left field that ended up scoring McKenna after an error. A double from
Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) plated Manowski, Peto scored on a single from Penk, and Penk scored on a single from Galanti.
Manowski was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while McKenna was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) earned the game one win, scattering just five hits through seven innings for her 13th win of the season.
In the second game, Alvernia jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to two bases-loaded fielder's choices. They took the 5-0 lead in the third with a bases-loaded two-RBI single from
Briana Coan (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) and an RBI-single from
Aly Shilling (Blue Bell, Pa./Christopher Dock). Alvernia added two more in the fourth with an RBI-double from
Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) and a McKenna RBI-single.
Albright got one back to make it 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth on a solo homerun, but Alvernia answered with four runs in the top of the fifth with RBIs from Penk and Galanti to make it 11-1. But the Lions managed three runs in their half of the fifth to extend the game.
Alvernia added five in the seventh to go up 16-4 and Albright managed three more for the 16-7 final.
Penk was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Peto, Galanti and Shilling all added two hits.
Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) went the distance for her 17th win of the season.
Alvernia will face Messiah on Wednesday afternoon in another Commonwealth Conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30pm.
