Softball Settles For Split With Messiah

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

Reading, Pa. (April 24, 2013)
- Alvernia (31-7, 14-2) used two big innings to take game one in 4.5 innings by a score of 11-3, before falling in the second game 4-2 in nine innings to Messiah (24-12, 10-6) in Commonwealth Conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

In the opener, Alvernia put up five runs in the second inning and six more in the fourth inning to earn the eight-run ruled 11-3 win.  In the second inning, after a strikeout, Rachel Fritz (Kenhorst, Pa./Governor Mifflin) roped a single up the middle and Shannon Grim (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) followed with a single to left.  Another single, this time from Aly Shilling (Blue Bell, Pa./Christopher Dock) scored a run, and after a walk the bases were loaded.  A bases-clearing triple to left field from Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) was next, and Peto scored the fifth run of the inning on a single from Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South).

Messiah got one back in the third, and added two more in the fourth to make it just 5-3, but Alvernia answered with six runs to put the game away in the bottom of the fourth.  Shilling got things started with a single, and Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) followed with an in-the-park homerun to right field for two RBIs.  Peto reached with a single, Penk walked and Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Acad. Sci./Tech.) followed with a single to plate Peto.  An infield single loaded the bases, and a sacrifice fly from Fritz added another run.  Another infield single loaded the bases again, and Shilling brough in the final two runs of the inning with a solid stroke up the middle.

Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) earned her 14th win of the season, allowing just four hits through five innings of work.

In game one, Shilling was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, Peto was 2-for-3 also with three RBIs and two runs scored and Manowski was 1-for-2 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored.

In the second game of the day, the Falcons took the 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth on a sacrific fly to left field, and added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a double and a single.  After managing just one hit through the first six innings, Alvernia rallied for two runs on three hits to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh.  Singles from Penk and Galanti got things started, and a double from Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) plated one and put runners on second and third.  A sacrifice fly from Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) plated the tying run, but a fly-out, throw-out ended Alvernia's threat.

The game headed to the eighth where neither team managed anything, but in the top of the ninth Messiah earned a two-out walk and followed that with a homerun for the 4-2 lead.  Alvernia had two baserunners with just one out in the bottom of the ninth, but a double-play ended the game.

Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) suffered her second loss of the season, throwing nine full innings, scattering eight hits and allowing three earned runs.

In game two, Penk and Kitchen were both 2-for-4 and Kitchen added an RBI.

Alvernia concludes their regular season play with a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at Arcadia on Saturday April 27th at 1:00pm.  Alvernia could enter playoffs as the top seed if Lebanon Valley loses a game to Eizabethtown on Saturday, otherwise they will take the second seed.
