Glenside, Pa. (April 27, 2013) - Alvernia (33-7, 16-2) took two from host Arcadia (16-22, 6-12) in Commonwealth Conference action Saturday afternoon at Arcadia. The Crusaders took advantage of seven Knight errors to take the opener 6-1, and followed that with a 10-2 win in game two.
In the opener, Arcadia managed an early run in the bottom of the first off of a two-out reach-on-error, followed by two singles for the 1-0 lead. Alvernia had loaded the bases with just one out in their half of the first but were unable to push a run across.
The game remained 1-0 until the top of the fifth when Alvernia took the 2-1 lead thanks to a lead-off walk from
Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South), a double from
Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Acad. Sci./Tech.) and a reach-on-error.
Rachel Fritz (Kenhorst, Pa./Governor Miffling) brought in the go-ahead run with a single to right field. Alvernia added two more in the sixth with another reach-on-error and an RBI-single from
Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley). Two more Alverni runs in the seventh, off the bat of
Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) gave the Crusaders the healthy 6-1 lead.
Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) went the distance in the circle, scattering eight hits through seven innings and giving up just the one unearned run in the first inning to earn her 15th win.
In the second game, Alvernia posted three runs in the top of the second for the early lead. The first two runs came in on an error by the first basemen, and another came across on a wild pitch. Three more Crusader runs in the top of the fourth put Alvernia up 6-0. A Penk triple to right field scored one, a single from Galanti scored Penk, while Galanti scored on a double steal.
Galanti knocked in another run in the top of the sixth to put Alvernia up 7-0, before the Knights rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a double and two singles.
Alvernia got some insurance in the top of the seventh thanks to a two-run homerun from
Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown), while a fielder's choice scored another for the 10-2 lead.
Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) earned her 18th win of the season, allowing just six hits through seven innings.
Alvernia has secured the second seed in the Commonwealth Conference Championships and will face Messiah on Friday, May 3rd at noon.
