Crusaders Post Shutout Sweep At E-Town

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

Elizabethtown, Pa. (April 6, 2013) - The Crusader softball team swept Elizabethtown (12-10, 4-6) behind two shutout pitching performances this afternoon in Commonwealth Conference action at Elizabethtown.  Sophomore Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) earned her ninth win of the season in the opener, allowing just six hits through six innings for the 9-0 win.  Senior Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) followed with a two-hitter to improve to 12-0 as Alvernia (21-3, 8-0) took game two 3-0.

In the first game of the afternoon, after two scoreless innings, Alvernia broke through with two runs in the top of the third.  After a single from Aly Shilling (Blue Bell, Pa./Christopher Dock) and a fielder's choice from Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island), Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) singled to put runners on first and second.  A reach-on-error loaded the bases, and Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Acad. Sci./Tech) singled up the middle to plate two runs.

The Crusaders added another run in the fourth inning as Rachel Fritz (Kenhorst, Pa./Governor Mifflin) led off the inning with a single, and after a groundout scored on a single through the left side from Manowski.

After a scoreless fifth, Alvernia exploded for six runs on six hits in the top of the sixth inning.  The inning started with two hit batters and a single up the middle from Shilling to load the bases.  A single from Manowski plated Fritz and a sacrifice fly from Peto plated another.  Two came across on a solid single up the middle from Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) and another jogged in after Fritz, up for the second time in the inning, earned a walk.  Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) plated the ninth run on an RBI-single from Shannon Grim (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown).

Despite loading the bases in the bottom of the sixth, the Blue Jays were not able to push across a run as Wolfe improved to 9-3 on the season.

In the second game, Alvernia plated a run in the top of the first on a double steal, and sophomore Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) connected for her first career homerun in the top of the fourth to put Alvernia up 2-0.  WIth Dungee cruising, Peto drove in Manowski in the top of the seventh for an added insurance run.

Dungee went seven full, allowing just two base hits and striking out four.

Manowski and Galanti were both 4-for-7 on the day with two RBIs and two runs scored.  Peto added a 3-for-6 performance with a run scored and an RBI.

Alvernia will face Lebanon Valley on Tuesday afternoon at home at 3:00pm in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader.  LVC and Alvernia are currently tied for first in the conference with perfect 8-0 records.
