BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

Reading, Pa. (April 9, 2013) - The Crusader's snapped Lebanon Valley's (20-4, 9-1) record-breaking 18-game winning streak Tuesday afternoon as they took game two of the Commonwealth Conference doubleheader by a score of 6-3.  Both Alvernia and LVC were a perfect 8-0 in conference play coming into today's games.  Senior pitcher Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) scattered 10 hits through seven innings, allowing three runs to hand the Dutchmen their first conference loss.  Alvernia (22-4, 9-1) fell in the opening game 2-0.

In the opener, LVC put up a run in the top of the third and another in the top of the seventh.  Alvernia pitcher Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) held the Dutchmen to just eight hits through seven innings, but two RBI-singles from Jorey Aumiller, batting out of the two-hole, made the difference.  Alvernia had runners on second base in three different innings but were not able to come up with a hit with runners in scoring position.  LVC pitcher, Sam Derr, the 2012 NCAA Division II Pitcher of the Year (Kutztown transfer) went the complete game for her 14th win of the season.

Alvernia had hits from five different players, including a 2-for-3 performance from Aly Shilling (Blue Bell, Pa./Christopher Dock)

In the second game of the day, with Derr again on the mound for LVC, Alvernia managed a run in the bottom of the first for the 1-0 lead.  Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) led off the inning with a reach-on-error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South).  Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Academy of Sci./Tech.) followed with a blooper to left field to score the speedy Peto.

The Dutchmen were poised to even-up the game in the top of the second as they loaded the bases with just one out.  Shortstop Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) gave Alvernia their second out and she fielded a ground ball and fired home to keep LVC off the scoreboard, and Shilling ended the inning with a tricky catch in foul territory.

Alvernia managed four more runs in the top of the second, all with two outs, for the 5-0 lead.  After a strikeout Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) drove a ball to the gap that was cut-off by the Dutchmen's speedy outfield to hold her to a long single.  A fielder's choice erased McKenna and put Shilling on first.  A double through the third basemen from Manowski put runners on second and third for Peto.  Peto tripled to right-center field to score both, and Penk followed with a single to score Peto.  After a walk from Galanti, Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) rapped a sharp ground ball up the middle that was knocked down, but a sliding Galanti made things messy at second base causing a dropped ball and allowing Penk to score all the way from second on the infield grounder.

LVC got two runs back in the top of the fourth on four hits and an error to make it 5-2.  Alvernia answered with their sixth run in the fifth inning thanks to an RBI-single from Shilling.

The Dutchmen continued to make things interesting, as, in the top of the seventh Derr led off the inning with a hit by pitch.  After a fielder's choice, a double to the gap in right center field scored a run.  Dungee got the next batter to fly out, but a Crusader error extended the inning and put runners on the corners.  With the tying run at the plate, Dungee forced a flyout to Peto to end the game.

McKenna was 2-for-2 with a walk in game two, while Alvernia got hits and RBIs from five other batters.

The Crusaders turn right around and face Eastern University in a non-conference doubleheader at home beginning at 3:00pm tomorrow.
