Reading, Pa. (May 11, 2013) – Top-seeded Alvernia University (36-9) plated five runs in the first inning and six more in the second on its way to a 13-1 win over #5 Alfred University (24-18) Saturday morning in game one of the ECAC South Region Softball Championship at Angelica Park.
The Crusaders batted around in each of the first two innings. Senior
Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa., Phoenixville) walked and stole second taking third on a throwing error by the catcher. Fellow senior
Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) brought in the first run of the game on a bunt single.
Designated player
Shannon Grim (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) doubled in a pair and
Rachel Fritz (Kenhorst, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and
Aly Shilling (Blue Bell, Pa./Blue Bell) followed with run-scoring doubles.
Sam Penk (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South) singled with one out in the second and also stole second, diving in in front of the throw. The Crusaders loaded the bases and
Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) drew a bases-loaded walk before Shilling delivered a two-run double.
Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) drove in the Crusaders' 11
th run of the day with a single to right center.
Alfred scored its run in the third. Maressa Mistretta doubled to open the inning, moved up on a sacrifice, and scored on a sacrifice pop out to Manowski in foul ground.
Alvernia tacked on two more runs in the fourth on RBI hits from Shilling and Manowski.
Grim and Shilling both went 3-for-3 in the game. Grim scored three runs while Shilling drove in four. Kitchen had the only other multi-hit game for the Crusaders going 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) went all five innings giving up one run on six hits.
The Crusaders advance to the winners bracket final and will face the winner of #2 Frostburg St., #6 Stevenson at 4:00 Saturday. The loser will play Alfred at 2:00 in the first elimination game.
