BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

Reading, Pa. (May 12, 2013) - Alvernia (37-11) fell to Frostburg State (32-12) in the winner's bracket match-up at the ECAC South Region Championships hosted by Alvernia at Angelica Park on Sunday morning by a score of 6-3.  They then defeated Stevenson University (24-23) by a score of 2-1 in nine innings to advance into the championship game where they fell to Frostburg State 11-2 in 4.5 innings.

In Alvernia's 2-1, 9-inning win over Stevenson it was the Mustangs who jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning on three solid hits.  The game remained 1-0 until Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) plated the tying run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly to score Caitlin Sablich (Maple Shade, NJ/Cherry Hill West).

With the game knotted 1-1 through 8.5 innings, the Crusaders staged a rally in the bottom of the ninth for the win.  After two quick outs, Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) reached on a single, and Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Acad. Sci./Tech.) followed with a single of her own.  After a fielder's choice from Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) loaded the bases, Shannon Grim (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) earned a walk to bring the winning run across.

Sophomore Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) earned her 17th win of the season, scattering 12 hits and just the one run through nine innings.

In the championship game, senior Kitchen was in the circle for her first start of the season and ran into some trouble early,  The heavy hitting Bobcats managed two runs in the first inning, four more in the second and two in the third.  Relief pitcher Breanna Worrell (Wenonah, NJ/Deptford Township), also seeing her first innings in the circle all season, surrendered three more runs in her 1.1 innings of work--all in the fourth inning.

The Crusaders got both of their runs on a two-RBI line-drive double to left field from Aly Shilling (Blue Bell, Pa./Christopher Dock) in the top of the fourth inning.
