Annville, Pa. (May 3, 2013) - The Crusaders got a two-run home run from Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Acad. Sci./Tech) in the first inning, and a three-run home run from Shannon Grim (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) in the third inning on their way to defeating Messiah College (25-14) by a score of 8-2 Friday afternoon at the Commonwealth Conference Championships. Alvernia (34-7) advances to face Lebanon Valley on Saturday at 11:00am after LVC defeated Hood by a score of 2-0 in the third game of the day.

Alvernia got on the board early thanks to a full-count walk from Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) followed by Galanti's two-run dinger in the bottom of the first. The Crusaders added four more in the bottom of the third for the 6-0 lead. Penk again got things started with a two-out single to left field and Galanti followed with a well-earned, full-count walk. A double down the left field line from Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) scored Penk, and Grim followed with a monster three-run shot over the left-center field fence.

The Falcons got one back in the top of the fourth to make it 6-1 on a walk, an error and a double. Alvernia answered right back with another run in the bottom of the fourth on a triple from Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenxville) and an RBI-groundout from Galanti. Another Alvernia run in the fifth off a Falcon error made it 8-1 Alvernia. A seventh-inning Messiah run accounted for the 8-2 final.

Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) went the distance in the circle, scattering just five hits and one earned run through seven innings.

Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) was 2-for-3, Penk was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored, while Galanti and Grim both had a hit and three RBIs.

Alvernia advances to face host Lebanon Valley tomorrow at 11:00am in the winner's bracket game. LVC defeated Hood 2-0 after Hood had defeated Stevenson 5-1 in the first game of the day.
